What is Lyocell? Read all about this material here

With the arrival of the beautiful Isabelle duvet cover, we have a new fabric in our range: lyocell. The Isabelle duvet cover is made from 50% cotton satin - the well-known and beloved fabric - and 50% lyocell. If you have not been introduced to this new fabric, we are delighted to tell you more about it in this blog post!

What is the fabric Lyocell?

This is a pretty technical story, but we will try to explain it to you. Lyocell is usually made from fast-growing eucalyptus trees, but oaks and birches can also be used. After harvest, the wood is cut into small pieces, ground into pulp, and then dissolved by the substance amine oxide. What remains is raw cellulose which is then pushed through spinnerets which have very small holes through which the solution is forced, coming out in continuous strands. After this these white lyocell fibers are spun into yarn and eventually woven into fabric.

So, what is TENCEL™?

Maybe you've heard of TENCEL™? TENCEL™ is the more well-known brand name of the fabric lyocell from the manufacturer Lenzing. TENCEL™, also known as lyocell, is a natural and very durable material that carries the European Ecolabel. Like 'regular' lyocell, TENCEL™ is made from cellulose from eucalyptus wood. This wood comes from special, sustainably managed forests where a new tree is planted for each one used. In addition, both the water and the solvents used during the production of this material are 99% recycled. Wonderfully sustainable!

Is Lyocell a Durable Fabric?

Yes, lyocell is a durable fabric because it uses fast-growing trees that grow well. They even grow on depleted soil, without irrigation, and use virtually no pesticides. No toxic chemicals are used in production and 99.5% of the solvents can be reused. Less water is used in production and the breathable quality of the fabric ensures that lyocell items need to be washed less often. And that's definitely a bonus!
